Patient fees

Fees vary for many reasons. Any quotation provided by clinic staff, especially over the phone, is an estimate only. When making an appointment we encourage patients to ask our receptionists for an estimate of the consultation cost. This is payable prior to leaving the clinic.

The specialist will provide surgical cost estimates during consultation. In some cases our practice nurses may provide an estimate for certain surgical procedures.

Southern Cross Healthcare Society

Our clinic is an Affiliated Southern Cross Provider. In most but not all consultations, Ultrasound scanning and surgical procedure we will be dealing direct with Southern Cross Healthcare on your behalf. You will only hear from us where your type of policy has a shortfall that you will be required to pay.

Some surgical procedures may not be covered under our Southern Cross contract – your Surgeon will advise you of this. In such cases you will be given an estimate of costs and you must contact Southern Cross to obtain a Prior Approval – we cannot do this for you.

Patient fees – Insurance and ACC

The patient will generally pay all the fees to the Specialist. If you are insured you will seek reimbursement from your insurer. The value of the reimbursement will depend on the type of policy maintained.

Prior approval

Most insurance companies and ACC require the patient to have written prior approval before having a surgical procedure, and sometimes before an initial consultation. The patient must obtain this approval and provide a copy to our reception.

Each medical insurer has their own specific policy requirements and the policyholder must ensure that they understand the terms of their specific policy are met or difficulties in receiving reimbursement may result.

Cost of consultations and procedures

All consultants that work at Tristram Clinic are private specialist practitioners, and as such charge for the services they provide to patients.

Consultation costs

The cost of a consultation can vary from $135 to $320 or more, depending on the referral requirements for the visit.

Surgical procedures costs

These will depend on the type and complexity of the procedure. Your specialist will provide you with an estimate at the consultation.

Local Anaesthetic surgical procedures carried out at Tristram Clinic excluding Vascular (see below) have the specialist surgical fee together with a theatre fee and consumables which are payable on completion of the procedures. Typically there will be a theatre fee ranging from $400 to $1,300 and a fee for consumables used in your surgery that may vary from $115 to $300 depending on your surgery.

Generally you will receive 3 accounts, one from the Surgeon, one from the anaesthetist and one from Collingwood Surgical Services owners of the hospital. Each invoice is generally paid individually.

For surgery at an external hospital – Braemar Hospital, Anglesea Hospital or Southern Cross Hospital – your consultant will provide you with a more detailed estimate covering the surgeon's fee, anaesthetist's fee, hospital theatre fees and the hospital accommodation fees. Each invoice is generally paid individually.

Southern Cross Preferred Provider Scheme covers some procedures and your consultant will advise you if this is applicable.
