Dr Oakley has been a specialist dermatologist in Hamilton since 1986. She is no longer accepting new patients but holds a monthly follow-up clinic at Tristram Clinic.
Amanda qualified from Bristol in 1979 when she emigrated to the Waikato. Her postgraduate training in dermatology was undertaken in New Zealand and United Kingdom. She was Clinical Director of the Department of Dermatology at Health Waikato from 1998 to 2010, where she remains a consultant, and is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Waikato Clinical School (Auckland University School of Medicine). She is also a Consultant for MoleMap New Zealand.
Amanda was President of the New Zealand Dermatological Society Incorporated and the Australian and New Zealand Vulvovaginal Society (both 2011-2013), and is current Vice President of the International Society of Teledermatology, a Board member for International Dermoscopy Society and for the British Journal of Dermatology. Professional memberships include the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Diseases. She is also a Trustee of the Waikato Medical Research Foundation. She is an International Honorary Member of the American Dermatological Association and holds Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Dermatology, Indian Teledermatology Society, North American Clinical Dermatology Society, Skin Cancer College of Australasia, Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners and MelNet New Zealand. Her awards include International Pioneer Award (Women’s Dermatological Assocation), TechSoup Google Lifetime Achievement Award, Presidential Citation Award (American Academy of Dermatology), Dennis Pickup Clinical Educator award (University of Auckland), Peter Rothwell Clinical Teacher Award (Waikato Clinical School) and Excellence Award for Exceptional Services to Dermatology (New Zealand Dermatological Society). She became a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018.
Amanda is Manager and Editor-in-Chief of DermNet NZ, the popular website all about the skin.
Amanda is an experienced general clinical dermatologist. She is particularly interested in the management of acne, psoriasis, skin cancer and ageing skin, photosensitivity and vulval skin disorders. Academic interests include teaching, dermatological information on the Internet, dermoscopy, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence in dermatology. She has published numerous articles in the medical literature and reviews articles for international journals. She lectures internationally about teledermatology and dermoscopy, and regularly facilitates workshops on dermoscopy.
