laser hair removal

Tristram Clinic has a Cutera Laser system that treats unwanted hair on the body. The Cutera laser system is the best laser hair removal system on the market for all types and tones, from light to dark, including tanned patients. Its unique design, longer wavelength and innovative cooling treatment head, allows extremely safe effective, permanent results.

The Cutera Laser Coolglide can remove hair from all parts of the body including the face, legs, arms, underarms and back. It can also treat sensitive areas like the chest, nipples and bikini line.

Using the latest technology of laser hair removal, the Coolglide can rapidly treat large areas without the limitations of older technologies. The Coolglide’s longer wavelength allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with light or dark skin as well as tanned skin. Unlike other systems, the Coolglide can treat the fine hair on a woman’s upper lip just as easily and effectively as the course hair on a man’s back. The Cooled hand piece increases patient comfort and minimizes the adverse skin reaction commonly seen with other lasers.

What do I do before the treatments

  1. Ensure that you are not tanned or using self-tanning lotions/spray in the treatment area.
  2. Ensure that the skin is not broken or infected.
  3. Please shave the area to be treated two days prior to the treatment.
  4. Do not wax the area within six weeks prior to the treatment.
  5. Read the list of photosensitising medications and discuss with Megan as necessary.

How many treatments

Most areas require 3-6 treatments, however, the number of Coolglide treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors. Hair thickness, the areas treated and your own hairs’ growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time and actually go through three distinct phases; growth, regression and resting phases. Coolglide treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.

Aftercare

The area treated will most likely have some sensation, similar to mild sunburn, for a few hours. You should not experience any real discomfort or swelling but if this does occur, cool the treated area with an icepack wrapped in a damp soft towel. Apply this for 10-15 minute each hour for four hours. It is essential to protect the treated area with an SPF30+ sunblock every day for four weeks. Shower as normal, ensuring you apply a good moisturiser at all times. Deodorant can be used the following day after an underarm treatment. Do not wax, pluck or have electrolysis on the area being treated whilst having laser hair removal. Shaving is acceptable. The hair may appear to keep growing as it works its way out of the follicle over the two weeks following the treatment.

Cost

The number of pulses required and the area treated will determine the cost of the treatment. Cost per treatment can range from $180 to $400.

laser limelight

At Tristram Clinic we use Cutera Laser Limelight for treating brown spots, pigmentation and for skin rejuvenation.

How does it work?

The Cutera Limelight produces light of all wavelengths, and therefore colour. A filter is then attached, which filters out the wavelengths not required for a specific treatment, thus making it a multipurpose machine. Once the correct filter is applied the light is directed at its target colour (brown for melanin and red for blood). When it reaches its target, light is absorbed and converted into heat, effectively destroying the target cells. The wavelength also determines the depth of penetration – very superficial for pigment and slightly deeper for red vessels. Surface pigmented lesions are more easily treated than pigmentation originating deeper in the skin, as with chloasma or melasma. How defined the edges of the pigmentation is, is an indication of its depth – well-defined edges for superficial and more ill-defined, with smudgy edges, for deeper lesions. Appropriate settings of the Cutera Laser machine are very individual. You will be asked to complete a detailed medical history form to ensure there are no contraindications to having the treatment, or factors that may affect your skin’s absorption of light. This information then determines the settings used. The therapist will start treatment at a joule (power) setting lower than what is likely to be effective, and then increase this gradually until the appropriate response, or end point, is found. Treatment is then carried out at this setting and is the starting point for subsequent treatments. It is not safe to treat skin that is tanned from UV light or false tan and a waiting period of 6 weeks is required before treatment can take place.

How many treatments?

2 – 5 treatments are necessary. Do not budget on less than two or you will be disappointed. We stop when you are happy, or there are no longer signs of improvement. There is continued rejuvenation of the skin, resulting in improvement in texture, pore size and tone. For this reason, many people will continue to have five sessions even if the pigmented spots have gone after treatment two or three.

Aftercare

  1. Immediately after treatment the treated area will most likely be quite pink. This is normal and can last for 2 – 24 hours.
  2. Brown or pigmented areas will darken at the time of treatment and usually continue to get darker over the next few hours. This is called the “Milo” effect. These areas peel off over the next 2 – 10 days taking much of the colour with them. Makeup can be applied during the peeling phase, as the skin is not actually broken so there is no risk of infection. It is important to follow the post care instructions, particularly in regard to keeping the area well moisturized and sun protected.
  3. Swelling is not uncommon for a few days, or up to one week afterwards. Women are more likely to get swelling than men. Swelling varies from localized lumpiness around the treated lesions (noticed when applying products the next day) to significant swelling and puffiness, particularly around the eyes. The degree of swelling is dependent on skin type, intensity of treatment, number of pulses used and proximity to the eyes.
  4. There is also a small chance of bruising. The bruises are usually quite small and localized to the area treated by a pulse, but can be very dark and difficult to hide with makeup. If it is inappropriate to have either swelling or bruising, owing to social commitments or type of work, when the therapist is talking through the consent form she will take this into account and adjust the settings accordingly. It may mean an extra one to two treatments overall, but does not detract from the end result. Treatments are performed at 4 – 6 weekly intervals.
  5. Blistering is uncommon but can occur on rare occasions.
  6. The most important aftercare is sun protection. If melanin producing cells are “upset” by the treatment and then the area exposed to the sun, upsetting the cells further, they will over produce melanin and new brown areas will appear. We recommend an SPF30+ sunblock to be used for 30 days post treatment, regardless of weather. If you are about to go on a beach holiday then postpone your treatment.

Cost

A full-face treatment costs $360 per session. Chest and necks are between $200 – $350 depending on the size of the area treated. Treatment to more than one area at a session is likely to be around $500.

laser for vascular problems
At Tristram Clinic we use Cutera Laser for treating vascular problems. This refers to the treatment of red facial, neck and chest veins and other vascular lesions like rosacea and spider naevi. The Cutera Laser combines the ideal wavelength with the most flexible parameters to deliver a superior vascular laser system. It treats a broad range of vessels from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins quickly, safely and effectively. Patients with dark, light or even tanned skin can experience outstanding results.

How does it work?

The Cutera Laser delivers pulses of light energy, which cause the blood within the vein to coagulate, eventually destroying the vessel, which is later reabsorbed by your body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below your skin’s surface, where it should be. The Cutera Laser can remove unsightly veins from all parts of the body. Small, facial veins [or telangiectasia] can be treated quickly without bruising or complications. Spider veins and large blue leg veins can also be treated with excellent results. Knotty varicose veins are not good candidates. A careful evaluation with your medical professional will help you to determine which vessels can be treated and the best course of treatment.

How many treatments?

Often, patients find that one or two treatments are sufficient. However, the number of treatments necessary depends on the number, colour and size of the vessels being treated. Individual results may vary.
Aftercare
Following your treatment, some redness or bruising may occur. Although many patients report few if any side effects, those most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin. These effects typically last for less than 24 hours. Some patients may experience bruising, and in rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information about the benefits and risks of treatment.

Cost

Laser treatments for treating vascular problems are quoted at $150 – $400 per session. For small lesions or extremely minor treatments such as spider naevi on children, the cost is at the technician ’s discretion. Generally there will an initial charge and then no further costs after that, but this will be discussed at the time of the first consultation.
